Boron Nitride media is supplied by Grinding Media Depot®, a division of Norstone, Inc., as one of five subtypes within the Exotic Grinding Media family alongside Tungsten Carbide, Silicon Carbide, Silicon Nitride, and Diamond media. Boron Nitride is a synthetic ceramic material available in hexagonal and cubic crystal structures, and it is supplied for fine particle size reduction in processes requiring high thermal stability, chemical inertness, and freedom from ferrous contamination. Its thermal and electrical properties distinguish it from the other Exotic subtypes, which are generally selected for density or hardness rather than thermal performance. Norstone, Inc. supplies Boron Nitride media across process volumes ranging from laboratory-scale evaluation to full production runs.
Boron Nitride media is defined by the following properties:
Because Boron Nitride is generally selected for thermal and chemical properties rather than density, the Grinding Media Selection Guide should be used to confirm whether this subtype, another Exotic subtype, or a different media family fits a given process.
Boron Nitride media is generally chosen for milling and grinding processes conducted in high temperature or thermally demanding environments, and for applications where metal contamination from grinding media must be avoided entirely. Compared to Tungsten Carbide media, a metal carbide composite, Boron Nitride is selected when ferrous contamination is unacceptable and thermal stability is the primary process requirement. Compared to Diamond media, the hardest option within the Exotic family, Boron Nitride is selected when thermal and electrical properties are the deciding factor rather than maximum achievable hardness.
Boron Nitride media supports wet and dry milling operations across the following applications:
Boron Nitride media is one of five grinding media types under Exotic Grinding Media. For a metal carbide alternative with the highest density in the family, see Tungsten Carbide Grinding Media. For the hardest available option, see Diamond Grinding Media. For a full comparison across all seven grinding media families, visit the Grinding Media hub or the Grinding Media Selection Guide.
