Carbon Steel Grinding Media

Carbon Steel media is supplied by Grinding Media Depot®, a division of Norstone, Inc., as one of three subtypes within the Steel Grinding Media family alongside Stainless Steel and Chrome Steel. Carbon Steel is an iron-carbon alloy media, supplied in ball and rod form for ball mill and rod mill applications, and represents the lowest cost entry point into the Steel Grinding Media family. It is generally specified as a first-consideration steel subtype before evaluating whether the corrosion resistance of Stainless Steel or the additional hardness of Chrome Steel is required for a given process. Norstone, Inc. supplies Carbon Steel media across process volumes ranging from laboratory-scale evaluation to full production runs.

    Characteristics

Carbon Steel media is defined by the following properties:

    • Iron-carbon alloy composition. Carbon Steel media is composed primarily of iron and carbon, without the chromium or nickel content used in Stainless Steel or the higher chromium content used in Chrome Steel.
    • Lower cost position. Of the three Steel Grinding Media subtypes, Carbon Steel is generally the lowest cost option, reflecting its simpler alloy composition.
    • Moderate hardness. Carbon Steel offers lower hardness than Chrome Steel media, which is heat-treated to a higher hardness range through its 52100 alloy composition.
    • Magnetic media. Carbon Steel is magnetic, a relevant characteristic in operations that use downstream magnetic separation to remove media wear particles from the finished product.
    • Available in ball and rod form. Carbon Steel is supplied in ball form for ball mills and rod form, in custom lengths, for rod mills.

Because Carbon Steel is generally selected on cost rather than corrosion resistance or maximum hardness, the Grinding Media Selection Guide should be used to confirm whether this subtype, another Steel subtype, or a different media family fits a given process.

When Carbon Steel Media Is Typically Selected

Carbon Steel media is generally chosen for general milling operations where low material cost per charge volume is a priority and a moderate degree of metal contamination is acceptable. Compared to Stainless Steel media, which is selected for corrosion resistance and reduced surface contamination, Carbon Steel is selected when moisture exposure and iron pickup are not process concerns. Compared to Chrome Steel media, which is selected for higher wear resistance in demanding conditions, Carbon Steel is selected when feed material is less abrasive and extended media life is a lower priority than cost per charge volume.

    Applications

Carbon Steel media supports wet and dry milling operations across the following applications:

    • General ball milling and rod milling where low material cost per charge volume is the primary consideration
    • Cement grinding and mineral processing operations tolerant of moderate metal contamination
    • Wet and dry milling applications where downstream magnetic separation is used to remove media wear particles
    • Production-scale grinding operations where charge volume and mill run time favor a lower cost media subtype over Stainless Steel or Chrome Steel
