Stainless Steel media is supplied by Grinding Media Depot®, a division of Norstone, Inc., as one of three subtypes within the Steel Grinding Media family alongside Carbon Steel and Chrome Steel. Stainless Steel is most commonly manufactured to the 440C alloy specification, with chromium content that provides corrosion resistance not present in Carbon Steel or Chrome Steel media. It is generally selected within the Steel Grinding Media family when moisture exposure, iron pickup, or reduced surface contamination are process concerns that outweigh Carbon Steel's lower cost. Norstone, Inc. supplies Stainless Steel media across process volumes ranging from laboratory-scale evaluation to full production runs.
Stainless Steel media is defined by the following properties:
Because Stainless Steel is generally selected on corrosion resistance rather than cost or maximum hardness, the Grinding Media Selection Guide should be used to confirm whether this subtype, another Steel subtype, or a different media family fits a given process.
Stainless Steel media is generally chosen for processes sensitive to iron pickup, moisture exposure, or surface contamination, where corrosion resistance outweighs the cost advantage of Carbon Steel media. Compared to Carbon Steel media, the lowest cost Steel subtype, Stainless Steel is selected when reduced surface contamination or corrosion resistance is required and the additional cost is justified by the process requirement. Compared to Chrome Steel media, which is selected for higher hardness and wear resistance, Stainless Steel is selected for corrosion resistance rather than maximum wear performance. Stainless Steel's non-magnetic property is also a consideration in facilities where magnetic separation of wear particles is not available or not effective for the material being processed.
Stainless Steel media supports wet and dry milling operations across the following applications:
Stainless Steel media is one of three grinding media types under Steel Grinding Media. For a lower cost general-purpose option, see Carbon Steel Grinding Media. For higher hardness and wear resistance, see Chrome Steel Grinding Media.
