Where Polyblade®, High Shear Impellers, High Vane Impellers, Propeller Blades, Turbine Blades, and High Viscosity Blades each address a defined flow pattern or viscosity range, Custom Impellers are engineered when tank geometry, batch characteristics, or material requirements fall outside those standard configurations. Norstone, Inc. builds Custom Impellers around a specific tooth pattern, diameter, and material combination for each application.
Custom Impellers most often arise at the boundary between two standard product lines, where a process needs elements of both. A batch that requires both wall contact and moderate shear, for example, may not be fully served by either an High Viscosity Blade or a Turbine Blade alone, and a custom configuration blending characteristics of both becomes the practical solution. Custom work also arises when replicating a legacy blade design that has been discontinued industry-wide, requiring Norstone, Inc. to reverse-engineer the original geometry from an existing part or drawing.

Custom Impellers are generally chosen when a tank geometry, batch characteristic, or material requirement falls outside what the six standard Blade Depot® product lines address. Compared to selecting the closest standard blade style and adapting the process to fit it, a Custom Impeller is selected when adapting the process is not practical or when the standard styles cannot meet the required tooth pattern, diameter, or material combination. Facilities replacing aging equipment with non-standard shaft or mounting configurations, scaling a lab-proven process to a non-standard production tank, or replicating a discontinued legacy blade design are common triggers for a Custom Impeller request.
Custom work also arises in retrofit situations, where a facility is upgrading a mixing tank's motor or drive system but wants to retain the existing shaft and mounting hardware. In these cases, a Custom Impeller can be engineered to match the legacy mounting geometry while updating the blade design to current material and shear requirements.
