This added stability comes at a higher cost than Soda Lime, positioning Borosilicate as an upgrade path rather than a general-purpose default.     Characteristics

    Borosilicate glass media is defined by the following properties:

    • Chemical resistance. Borosilicate withstands a broader range of solvents and process chemistries than Soda Lime media, reducing the risk of media degradation over repeated processing cycles.
    • Thermal stability. Borosilicate holds up better under elevated or fluctuating temperatures than standard glass compositions, an important consideration for processes involving heat generation during milling.
    • Moderate density. Borosilicate sits within the typical density range for glass media, producing a grinding action comparable to Soda Lime and generally milder than the higher-density Barium Titanate subtype.
    • Consistent performance under stress. The combination of chemical and thermal stability allows Borosilicate media to maintain consistent grinding performance over longer production runs and more demanding process conditions than Soda Lime.
    • Higher cost than standard glass. Borosilicate is priced above Soda Lime media, reflecting its improved resistance properties, making it best reserved for applications that specifically require that added stability.

    Because Borosilicate is positioned as a chemical and thermal upgrade rather than a general-purpose default, it is not always the most cost-effective glass choice.     When Borosilicate Media Is Typically Selected

    Borosilicate glass media is generally chosen when a process involves chemical or thermal conditions that would degrade Soda Lime media over repeated cycles, such as solvent-based formulations or milling processes that generate significant heat. Compared to Soda Lime Glass Media, Borosilicate offers meaningfully greater resistance at a higher cost, making it the appropriate choice once process conditions exceed what standard glass can reliably handle. For formulations sensitive specifically to alkali ion leaching rather than general chemical exposure, Low Alkali Glass Media addresses that narrower concern more directly than Borosilicate's broader chemical resistance. When a process requires more aggressive particle size reduction in addition to chemical stability, Barium Titanate Glass Media provides higher density within the same family.

    Against non-glass families, Borosilicate still trades some hardness and wear resistance for lower cost compared to Silica or Alumina media, while offering greater chemical resilience than polymeric media can typically provide in solvent-heavy applications. Processes converting from Soda Lime to Borosilicate generally do not require significant adjustments to mill loading or speed, since the two subtypes share a similar density range.
