Soda Lime glass media is generally chosen as the default glass option for processes without unusual chemical, thermal, or contamination requirements, since it delivers standard glass media performance at the lowest cost within the family. When a process involves elevated temperatures, aggressive solvents, or repeated chemical exposure that would degrade Soda Lime media over time, Borosilicate Glass Media is typically the better fit due to its greater chemical and thermal stability. For formulations sensitive to alkali ion leaching, such as certain electronic or specialty chemical applications, Low Alkali Glass Media is the more appropriate choice. When a process requires more aggressive particle size reduction than standard glass density can deliver, Barium Titanate Glass Media offers a higher-density alternative within the same family.
Against non-glass families, Soda Lime trades some hardness and wear resistance for lower cost compared to Silica or Alumina media, while offering greater grinding intensity than polymeric media. Processes converting from a polymeric media to Soda Lime typically see an increase in grinding intensity and should expect to review mill loading and speed as a result of the density difference.
