Low Alkali glass media is supplied by Grinding Media Depot®, a division of Norstone, Inc., as one of four glass subtypes alongside Soda Lime, Borosilicate, and Barium Titanate medias. Within the glass family, Low Alkali is formulated with reduced alkali content to limit ion leaching during processing, addressing a narrower concern than the broader chemical resistance offered by Borosilicate media. This makes Low Alkali the preferred glass subtype for formulations where even minor alkali ion contamination would affect product performance, appearance, or regulatory compliance. Norstone, Inc. supplies Low Alkali media across the full range of process volumes, from laboratory-scale evaluation to production quantities.
Low Alkali glass media is defined by the following properties:
Because Low Alkali addresses a narrower concern than Borosilicate's broader chemical resistance, it is not always the right upgrade path from Soda Lime media. The Grinding Media Selection Guide should be used to confirm whether Low Alkali, another glass subtype, or a different media family fits a given process.
Low Alkali glass media is generally chosen when a process is specifically sensitive to alkali ion leaching, rather than general chemical or thermal degradation. Formulations in electronics-adjacent processing, specialty chemical manufacturing, and certain battery material applications commonly require this narrower form of contamination control, where even Borosilicate's improved chemical resistance may not sufficiently limit ionic presence. Compared to Soda Lime Glass Media, Low Alkali offers meaningfully reduced ion leaching at a higher cost, making it the appropriate choice once alkali sensitivity becomes a defined process requirement rather than a general precaution. For processes facing broader chemical or thermal stress without a specific alkali sensitivity, Borosilicate Glass Media is typically the more directly applicable upgrade. When a process requires more aggressive particle size reduction in addition to reduced ion leaching, Barium Titanate Glass Media provides a higher-density alternative within the same family.
Against non-glass families, Low Alkali still trades some hardness and wear resistance for lower cost compared to Silica or Alumina media, while offering ion control that polymeric or metal media families do not directly address in the same way. Processes converting from Soda Lime to Low Alkali generally do not require significant adjustments to mill loading or speed, since the two subtypes share a similar density range.
Low Alkali glass media is commonly used in processes where alkali ion contamination would directly affect product function or compliance. Typical applications include battery and energy material processing, where ionic purity affects downstream cell performance, specialty chemical manufacturing involving ion-sensitive reactions, and certain minerals and ceramics processing steps where alkali contamination would alter material properties. Low Alkali glass media is one of four subtypes within Glass Grinding Media. Related glass subtypes include:
Low Alkali media is also frequently specified alongside dispersing and mixing equipment from Blade Depot, particularly for ion-sensitive milling applications. For a full comparison across all seven grinding media families, visit the Grinding Media hub or the Grinding Media Selection Guide.
