Because Flint prioritizes cost efficiency over manufacturing consistency and hardness, it is not always the right choice for demanding or highly consistent process requirements. Flint grinding media is generally chosen as the entry-level silica option for processes that need more hardness than glass media provides but do not require the manufacturing consistency of Magnesium Silicate or the added wear resistance of Alumina Silicate or Zirconium Silicate media. When a process requires tighter batch-to-batch consistency, Magnesium Silicate is typically the more appropriate step up within the silica family. When a process requires finer particle size reduction or greater media longevity, Alumina Silicate or Zirconium Silicate media are the more suitable choice despite their higher cost.
Against non-silica families, Flint offers greater hardness than glass media at a moderate cost increase, while remaining significantly more economical than Alumina or Zirconia media. Processes converting from glass to Flint typically see a modest increase in grinding intensity and should expect to review mill loading as a result of the density difference.
